A bit of background about each Board Member (alphabetical)
Kevin, from Aylesbury, has coached competitive swimmers onto Great Britain junior and senior teams and has been selected onto these teams as a member of the GB Coaching staff. He has a good understanding of the daily running requirements of the leisure facilities as he was one of the original staff that opened Aqua Vale in 2001.
Miles’s business career has been spent advising companies on their pension policies. He retired from Watson Wyatt as a Partner in 2004 and is currently a Director of BESTrustees, one of the UK's leading independent trustee companies. In his role at BESTrustees, he chairs eight trustee pension boards, including Barnardos. Miles retired as Chair of the Audit Committee of the Buckinghamshire New University in 2009. He supports a number of charities, but the one he spends most time with is the Chilterns MS Trust, based at Halton.
As the Earl of Buckinghamshire, Miles was a member of the House of Lords between 1984 and 1999. He spoke frequently on his specialist subject, pensions, and was a member of several House of Lords European Sub Committees.
Mike, who qualified as a Certified Accountant in Bristol in 1975 and was elected Fellow (FCCA) in 1981, has lived in Aylesbury Vale since he joined Rothmans in 1978. He held a number of senior positions in the company, including Group Treasurer and Director of Financial Services before becoming Head of International Pensions and Benefits at British American Tobacco, following the merger of the two companies in 1999. Mike was also a Fellow of the Association of Corporate Treasurers but resigned from both the FCCA and FCT upon his retirement in 2003. Since then he has remained active as a trustee director, company secretary and fundraiser for Jigsaw Theatre Company, a local charity dedicated to enabling disabled people to take part in the performing arts. A keen footballer and cricketer, who captained Bucks County Council C.C. for many years before his retirement, Mike has been a member at Aqua Vale leisure centre for the past seven years.
Lisa currently works as a fitness instructor for AVDC and as a freelance netball coach, working in Buckinghamshire schools. Previous to this, she worked for 10 years with students at Buckinghamshire New University. A keen sports person, Lisa is passionate about access to good quality and affordable sporting and leisure provision and believes that provision for children and families is of great importance in the local community. She has lived in Aylesbury for the past eight years and has a son who goes to a local primary school.
Sam moved to Aylesbury 16 years ago to lead the artistic programme at Aylesbury Civic Centre as Programme Manager, then a General Manager role as Centre Manager. Sam joined HQ Theatres Ltd as Theatre Director, Wycombe Swan Theatre before taking up a strategic role at head office as Head of Community and Development. Sam completed an MBA in 2008 to add to an MA attained earlier in her career. She is currently working as a Business Development Consultant for Team London Bridge on an Urban Regeneration Project and for Bucks New University project managing ‘Rhythm in Sport’, a 2012 Creative Campus Initiative. Sam has recently become a Trustee of Jigsaw Theatre Company. She is a keen sports person and regularly swims at Aqua Vale.
Ian and his son Andrew swim at the Aqua Vale Leisure Complex several times a week. He is the Group Commercial Director of Methodist Education, a major national charity; he is also a voluntary leadership coach, a founding director and chair of audit of a national skills academy; and has significant previous board level experience gained during the last 10 years in both the charity and public sectors. A graduate of Aberdeen University, Ian also holds an MSc (Corporate Management) and the ACCA post graduate diploma in finance, and is a professionally certificated member of the Institute of Fundraising.
Before retirement she was a Personal Assistant to the Medical Director of Searle Pharmaceuticals and was involved in organising many of their medical symposiums marketing drug trials. She became a District Councillor in 1990 representing Oakfield Ward, Aylesbury and served for 4 years as Chairman of the Personnel Committee. Other than AVCT she represents the council on the Bucks Play Association and Buckinghamshire Mind. She is a member of the Aqua Vale and the Alzheimer’s disease Society.
Councillor Roberts moved to Aylesbury from North London more than 35 years ago. He spent most of his working life in sales and marketing, clocking up 18 years as Marketing Services Manager with Hitachi. He has an interest in all kinds of sport, having played football, cricket and squash.
Born in Aylesbury and has lived all his life in and around the Vale; the last 33 years in the village of Ashendon. As a youngster he used the old Vale Park Open Pool then later in life, he not only used but worked on the construction of the Maxwell Pool. Michael has been employed by several Facility Management Companies within the area using his knowledge gained within the Development and Construction Industry.
